Sashiko is a form of Japanese folk embroidery using the base point to create a patterned background. Geometric patterns consist of straight or curved seam lines arranged in a repetitive pattern. The Japanese word Sashiko means «small stab wounds» and refers to the small stitches used in this form of needle work.
Sashiko thread, a tightly twisted heavy cotton thread, is used in traditional Japanese Sashiko.
